How might we enable users to save content so they can easily access it at a later date?

After introducing the Explore section in the app, users could easily find content aligning with their fitness goals, however a notable gap emerged as users expressed a desire to save and retrieve such content for future use. Recognising this need as the most requested feature post-launch, we were keen on delivering a solution promptly. In response, I designed the experience from discovery to delivery. The goal was not just to address the immediate concern but also to future-proof the feature. This involved taking a holistic approach, considering user education through feature highlights and empty states, flows for adding, accessing and managing bookmarks, whilst considering aspects like interaction feedback and the types of content eligible for bookmarking.

The Process

To empathise with users and grasp their needs, I collaborated with UX researchers to gather feedback from app stores, surveys, and interviews. We identified key themes to guide our problem-solving approach. Conducting trendscape research, I documented patterns in bookmarking behaviour, including terminology and interaction feedback. Integrating user feedback and trends, I explored various aspects such as what content could be bookmarked, where to store bookmarks, and interaction design. Developing user flows, I analysed how users could bookmark content, access their bookmarks, and the steps involved. Three concepts were tested, focusing on bookmark location, terminology, and functionality. The feature implementation was successful, resulting in a 16% increase in workout starts and a 54% increase in app engagement.
